What to visit in Punta Arenas and its surroundings?

Planning a trip to Chilean Patagonia is always exciting, but it can be confusing. If you are thinking about visiting the south of Chile, but you only have a few days and you are not sure in which city you should look for your accommodation, today we are going to tell you everything you can do in Punta Arenas. Take note!

One of the main destinations in Chilean Patagonia, and the reason why travellers from all over the world come to this remote place, is the Torres del Paine National Park. Although the city of Puerto Natales is closer to this incredible natural space, Punta Arenas is the best starting point for this and other impressive places in Patagonia.

First of all, this city is located on the famous Strait of Magellan, so you can start imagining the landscape that surrounds it. In the city itself, you cannot miss tourist places such as the Cerro de la Cruz, from where you can have a panoramic view of Tierra del Fuego, and the Punta Arenas Cemetery. If you go a little further, you will reach Fort Bulnes, ideal for appreciating the Strait of Magellan. To get to know Punta Arenas, the best thing to do is to take a city tour in which you will get to know every secret of the city.

But we cannot deny that the most exciting thing about Punta Arenas is in its surroundings. In the north of the Strait of Magellan you can find Magdalena Island, where the second largest colony of Magellanic penguins lives, which you can see up close. Also from Punta Arenas you can take the King Penguin tour through Tierra del Fuego and meet the second largest penguin in the world.

If you are passionate about nature and animals, a unique experience in this region is dolphin and whale watching, but it becomes even more special when you choose to kayak with whales around you.

If trekking is your thing, Punta Arenas is also the perfect destination. For example, you can explore the Magallanes National Reserve, see the volcanoes of the Pali Aike National Park or enjoy incredible views at the San Isidro Lighthouse and Cape Froward.

Of course, you can also go to Torres del Paine from Punta Arenas. You have the option of taking the Torres del Paine Full Day tour or traveling to Puerto Natales from Punta Arenas and organizing your entire adventure from that city. Either way, your days in Torres del Paine will remain etched in your memory forever.
